Primary 1M

We have enjoyed a fabulous start to the new term and are working extremely hard in all areas of the curriculum.

We have enjoyed lots of new number concepts including addition, doubles and near doubles. We are learning all about numbers to 20 and beyond. In information handling we will be making a bar graph and interpreting information from various pictograms. We carry out many of our number activities actively and have opportunities to observe, explore, investigate, discuss and reflect. Through the theme of the Toyshop we are working with money and developing our mental agility when counting. We have even taken our number work outside and have been working on our number stories actively with natural materials!

In language, we are making good progress with our vocabulary and are using our phonic rules to sound out unfamiliar words for ourselves! We have been working very hard on our common words and are trying really hard to reinforce them. Miss McColligan now gives us dictation where we have to sound out the words and write them. We love going to the computer suite and using Education City to help us learn our new sounds. We now know the whole alphabet, vowels, double sounds and we are trying to blend. We are enjoying our new reading books and are able to discuss the characters and events confidently.

This term we have received letters from a man called Mr Wainsthrop, he has asked for our help as his toyshop is not very successful. This is the focus for our interdisciplinary topic and we are having a great time with this.

We are enjoying many opportunities to work collaboratively, independently and actively. The boys and girls are making links across the curriculum and understand the purpose and relevance of what they are doing. The children are leading the learning and have impressed Miss McColligan with their ability to solve problems and think critically.

We look forward to seeing you all at our open night.

Thanks for all the things your children have brought in to support their work.In term 4 our topic is called, ‘In the Garden’ and we will explore the concept of growth and caring for the living environment.

Thank you for your help and support throughout the year.
